Marketplace instability: crash often when simply browsing

    Anybody else experiencing that?

I can literally crash the Marketplace app on the phone every time I use it (had the Samsung Focus since US launch date Nov. 8th).

The steps to reproduce are easy: go to the Marketplace on the phone, select apps, then browse (for instance go to the Free tab or New tab then keep scrolling down).

The point at which it crashes is not always the same.
Sometimes it crashes right away, sometimes you have to scroll several pages, sometimes you select an app then go back to the list and it crashes.

Not only it happens very often, but once it crashes the UI completely freezes (you can get out by pressing the Windows key) and you can no longer get back to the Marketplace.

When trying to launch it again it will display the "launching..." animation for 10 seconds then die and go back to the home screen.

The only way to recover is to reboot the phone!

The first time it happened I didn't even think about rebooting the phone (have the phone been running Windows 95 or 98 I would have though of that right away but I have to admit MSFT OSes have been pretty reliable in the last decade), and I don't reboot things often, leading to a 3 day outage of the Marketplace.

I'm pretty sure lots of customers are affected (I also managed to crash a demo phone at an ATT store without especially trying!) and that a good chunk of them will just give up trying the start the Marketplace.
And I don't think the majority of the people will think about rebooting their phone as they see the Marketplace app as just another regular app on the phone.

This marketplace instability (coupled with its amazing slowness, but that's not the subject of this thread and we hope the upcoming update will really speed it up) for sure leads to less overall sales, affecting the whole eco-system.

MSFT, was this (serious/critical/priority one/fix asap) bug fix for the upcoming release?

    Thanks,

Hi, I have the same problem... I managed to crash it two times. After that I had to reboot the phone to be able to start the marketplace app.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. Hopefully it will be fixed with the coming minor update.

This is a well known bug and it should have been hotfixed MONTHS ago since average joe probably does not realize that he needs to reboot his phone to fix this. If average joe is unable to use the market place all of us suffer - and in the end the platform. Personally I've lost hope that Microsoft is able to handle this. They are just not agile enough.

It calls for MSFT to be able to push small and targeted updates, especially update to different "apps".

For instance why can't just the Marketplace, or Internet Explorer (pretty buggy too...) be updated the same way apps are being updated?

Why do we need to re-flash the whole OS (and wait months for fixes) to fix critical bugs like Marketplace crashing (or Trial Apps impossible to update)?

I don't remember having to re-install Windows 7 (desktop) when upgrading Internet Explorer.

    Cheers,

I've also been having the same issue ever since I received my HD7 on 11/9. I would say its by far the most annoying problem with the WP7 platform at the moment and urgently needs attention. It makes an otherwise stable mobile device not seem so stable. Its also VERY slow!

Anymore word on this issue? I'm not sure about everyone else, but my marketplace is still freezing on a fairly regular basis and performance is generally very poor. The LG Quantum we also use as a dev testing device also shows similar problems. The main time I notice the speed issues is when scrolling through apps. The marketplace stability and performance issues to me are the biggest pressing problem with WP7 at the moment. It's difficult for users to find apps listed only a few pages down due to the painfully slow scrolling issue.

Also, any word if free apps will be added back into the app categories instead of just being visible on the free apps page? I know there was a discussion about this topic awhile back, but never heard an official response from Microsoft.

BTW: Does the "NODO" update attempt to address the performance issue?

    Thanks!
